Narrative is the reason a story works - or fails.

Narrative is the reason a story works — or fails.

You don’t need narrative — you already have it. It’s the process through which you see the world, and it’s how you decide what to do next.

Stories are the product of narrative: they describe how you saw the world, and what you did next, after it happened — for an audience. When your story doesn’t “work” — you’re not getting the response you expected — it’s probably because your narrative is so different from your audience’s that the story doesn’t make sense.

When you know your narrative, you can tell your story ten different ways and mean the same thing.

Know Your Narrative

Multiple stories can express the same narrative; know your narrative and you’ll never get stuck choosing your story.

Read the Audience

Narrative happens on both sides of a story; find the story that works best for your audience.

Choose Your Story

The most important part of storytelling isn’t your delivery, it’s choosing which one to tell.
